A little harder to get to than many of the other Colorado resorts, the self-titled “Last Great Colorado Ski Town”, is well worth the journey.

Crested Butte is one of the best preserved historic, Victorian mining towns in Colorado and the ski area is a real gem. Families with children learning to ski are very well catered for, but do not think of. Crested Butte as just another small American ski resort in the shadow of its better known rivals. It is famous for it’s challenging in bounds black terrain and not forgetting some great off-piste areas.Indeed one of our colleagues from the UK liked the area so much, he now lives there!

Named trails cover only half the terrain at Crested Butte Ski Resort; the free-skiing areas of the resort comprise some of the most challenging terrain of any ski area in the world. All but the most confident and advanced skiers and snowboarder should avoid the area labelled Extreme Limits, but if you can handle it, it is not to be missed. The Peak area can only be accessed by hiking, but the steep drops make it worth the effort. Advanced riders will also enjoy the chutes and open runs of Teocalli Bowl. For tree skiing, head to the Double Top Glades via the East River. Mogul lovers will enjoy the bumps under the Silver Queen and Twister lifts. The other runs served by these lifts are less challenging but fun groomed rides.

Crested Butte Ski Resort has plenty of terrain for beginners and intermediates too. The best cruisers are beneath the Paradise and Teocalli lifts. In good powder, the Paradise Bowl is suitable for lower-level skiers.Beginners will be challenged by the green trails at Crested Butte Ski Resort  but these are no bunny slopes. The gentlest slope, after the first-time stuff off the Peachtree lift, is probably Houston trail, but other runs off Keystone lift are more fun and still manageable with practice

Crested Butte is a down to earth resort. Ideal for those interested in great skiing in the day, and relaxation in the evenings, in a pretty and atmospheric setting, with stunning views. The accommodation is located around the base area of the mountain and has a good mixture of hotel rooms and multi bedroom condos, with one fabulous catered chalet. There is a reasonable selection of restaurants, bars, cafes and other amenities in the ski village that also boasts a brand new tubing park, climbing wall and ice skating rink to keep the kids and some adults, happy.

The town of Crested Butte is 3 miles from the Ski Village and is definitely worth visiting for a few evenings out. The Pizza restaurant is a local favorite and some bars are open late. Here, you will find the ski-bums hanging out and definitely experience some wild times. There is a very good selection though of over 30 restaurants to select from. The town is accessed by the free village bus which runs until midnight.

Check out Telluride as well and if you are looking at a 2 week vacation, look at a 2 centre trip with Telluride. The ones who have done it all give rather favourable verdicts.
