Banff, Alberta, Canada, is a relatively short transfer from Calgary and offers some world class skiing and scenery that just blows your mind. The ski area is commonly referred to as The Big 3, for the three ski resorts and all are covered by the tri-area lift pass.Banff is a great base to explore the Big 3 with the local ski area called Mount Norquay, just under 8km from Banff town. The next nearest ski area is Sunshine Village, just over 16km away, with the third and biggest ski area being Lake Louise, just under 65km away. There is a free shuttle bus service to all of them. Each has its own special qualities and visiting all three, even if you spend the majority of your time in Lake Louise or Sunshine, is a must thing to do.

Staying in Banff is relatively inexpensive for your Canadian Ski Holiday as unusually with such great skiing, winter is classed as their off season, with huge visitor numbers arriving and trekking round Banff National Park, in summer.Banff has a vast choice of hotels to suit any budget from the basis Voyager Inn through to the stunning Fairmont in Banff. Then there is a choice of self catered condos too.

Apres ski wise Banff is very lively and continues until the early hours. There is a good number of shops though few boutiques.Banff is more suited to adults and groups wanting more nightlife whereas Lake Louise is more suited to families given the easier access to the slopes and quiet nightlife.

Lake Louise was actually voted the best ski area in Canada for 2015, so they must be doing something right. This petit village, 45 mins from Banff, is perfectly located for the skiing with the hotels offering restaurants and bars to enjoy yourselves at.Endless powder, big ski area (the biggest on the pass) and stunning views adds to the atmosphere.Mountain hosts guide you round the mountain and with the free passes for children, if you book before December children can have free ski hire too.(Conditions apply). Thus Lake Louise becomes even more affordable for families.Accommodation options are more limited than Banff but still offer great choices such as the Chateau Fairmont, Deer Lodge,Paradise Lodge, Lake Louise Inn and the log cabins at Baker Creek Lodge.Yes both Banff and Lake Louise has something for everyone and though the skiing is world class the stunning scenery is worth the trip alone.
